To get back into the real sharing activity and intent of this blog to share my experiences with visitors, I plan to begin a series of short stories about my measurement experiences in both a small and large organizations over my multiple careers in R& D, Instrument Marketing and web publishing.
In my multifaceted careers I have worked with and in very large, large, small and tiny organizations and seen firsthand some of the activities in the W. E. Deming mode that inspired me. The Dilbert cases were there, too; they were the ones that convinced me some managers were pure idiots, or acted that way, no matter how intelligent they were.
In case you are unfamiliar with the name W. E. Deming, his full name is W. Edwards Deming and his traditions and teaching about a better management (and measurement) world are carried on at the Deming Institute, and elsewhere. His legacy in well known among Quality Assurance people and in Japan the annual prizes for top quality management are given each year in his name. Read the rest of this entry »
NCSL International issues a call to action by the Metrology Community
Boulder CO, USA — According to NCSL International’s Press release dated May 28th: The US Dept. of Labor rejects petition to recognize Metrology job descriptions in its proposed 2010 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) System”
We know that Metrology is the bedrock upon which all U.S. commerce and manufacturing is built and that persons engaged in metrology/calibration activities provide services vital to the U.S. economy and national defense.
It is also widely known that in the United States there is a critical shortage of technical personnel posed to replace retiring baby-boomers.
The U.S. Dept. of Labor’s SOC provides formal recognition of job descriptions which are the basis for its Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) used by educators and counselors to inform students about career opportunities.
If the SOC does not include Metrology job descriptions neither will the OOH.
The following is the reason given by an SOC administrator as to why Metrology job descriptions were rejected; Read the rest of this entry »

Company Video demonstrates versatility & speed of compact liquid handling system {Click on Image to go to page with video}
Melbourn, UK — Velocity11, an Agilent Technologies company and pioneer in automation technology solutions for life science laboratories, has produced a new online video that demonstrates and describes its Bravo™ Liquid Handling Platform.
Its space-saving nine plate-position footprint can fit inside a standard laminar flow hood, enabling automated liquid handling for cell-based assays or hazardous reagent handling.
The Bravo utilises the proven high-accuracy pipette heads of the VPrep™ pipettor for dispensing from 100 nl to 200 ul in 96, 384, and 1536 well formats or to a single column or row of any of these plate types.
The deck is easily customised to meet a wide range of assays, with numerous plate pad options. Additionally, the unique, highly open design of the Bravo platform permits access from all sides for simple integration with other devices and unencumbered standalone use. Read the rest of this entry »
The goal of the SocialCalc project, as described on the Software Garden OLPC Home Page, is “to provide a capable, simple spreadsheet which runs locally on your computer”.
Software Garden is involved in the project of Socialtext, Inc., to provide a system based on a new version of the SocialCalc spreadsheet code on the OLPC XO-1 computer that is being called “SocialCalc” on the One Laptop per Child - OLPC initiative.
The main engine is written in JavaScript and is available under Open Source licenses. Much of the code, being written in a common scripting language, should lend itself to examination, reuse, experimentation, modification, and extension.
The latest version and its documentation is free and is downloadable from the page link above.
Indeed, he is correct. Checking the source material is easier these days and the poll finding are published right on the Zogby website.
The Survey, dated Feb. 27, 2007 also says: (the survey) “finds two-thirds (of Americans surveyed) dissatisfied with the quality of journalism”.
Also, according to the same survey: “Web sites are regarded as a more important source of news and information than traditional media outlets”
Since this is a rapidly growing effect, it seems reasonable to conclude that the same trend is even more likely to be pronounced within the technology communities where use of Web & Net, in general, is more highly concentrated. Thus not only news and education resources are affected, but also the very way business-to-business interactions and skill honing are practiced.
I wonder how long it will be before Virtual Conferences and Expos overtake physical ones?
The Measure Activity on One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is a tool on the XO, the $200 computer now in production, that allows kids to indulge in “learning by doing”.
It provides an interface for the kids to connect with the physical world and an opportunity to view and understand through a visual and statistical representation of the physical phenomena.
Using the Measure Activity on the XO, one can:
Connect sensors (light, heat, magnetic field etc) and view their signal. Thus it is possible to view and study physical phenomena
Input voltages and signals into the XO laptop and use it as an oscilloscope and
Log data at a specified interval and store and retrieve waveforms
