Photo of SocialCalc on an XO-1The goal of the SocialCalc project, as described on the Software Garden OLPC Home Page, is “to provide a capable, simple spreadsheet which runs locally on your computer”.

Software Garden is involved in the project of Socialtext, Inc., to provide a system based on a new version of the SocialCalc spreadsheet code on the OLPC XO-1 computer that is being called “SocialCalc” on the One Laptop per Child - OLPC initiative.

The main engine is written in JavaScript and is available under Open Source licenses. Much of the code, being written in a common scripting language, should lend itself to examination, reuse, experimentation, modification, and extension.

The latest version and its documentation is free and is downloadable from the page link above.

Can Or Box Pinhole Camera

Described in wonderful detail, the pinhole camera is an easy to make introduction to the world of photography as this page on the KODAK web site shows.

What is A Pinhole Camera. you ask?

It is simply..”a small, light-tight can or box with a black interior and a tiny hole in the center of one end. By using common household materials, you can make a camera that will produce pictures.”

You don’t even need a PC or a digital camera, just some simple tools a little film and some way to develop the film.

Implications for B2B, Meetings, Expos & Training Seem Clear

In an online article, by the same name, on the WebProNews site, by Mike Sachoff on Mon, March 3, 2008 Mike says that there has been a 40% increase over last year according to a new We Media/Zogby Interactive poll.

Indeed, he is correct. Checking the source material is easier these days and the poll finding are published right on the Zogby website.

The Survey, dated Feb. 27, 2007 also says: (the survey) “finds two-thirds (of Americans surveyed) dissatisfied with the quality of journalism”.

Also, according to the same survey: “Web sites are regarded as a more important source of news and information than traditional media outlets”

Since this is a rapidly growing effect, it seems reasonable to conclude that the same trend is even more likely to be pronounced within the technology communities where use of Web & Net, in general, is more highly concentrated. Thus not only news and education resources are affected, but also the very way business-to-business interactions and skill honing are practiced.

I wonder how long it will be before Virtual Conferences and Expos overtake physical ones?
